Hi. I’m a writer and editor in North Carolina, and the editor of Charlotte magazine. My writing has appeared in Success, Washingtonian, POLITICO, Southwest, and SB Nation longform, along with many others. I’ve received multiple notable selections in Best American Sports Writing and Best American Essays. Stories I’ve written or edited have been picked up by the Nieman Storyboard, gangrey.com, longform.org, longreads.com, and byliner.com. I’ve been a presenter at the Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Conference and the Poynter Institute.

I aim to tell stories that give small glimpses into what it means to be alive at this moment. In May 2017, the City and Regional Magazine Association named my three-part series on the Myers Park High School football team its feature of the year, and Charlotte magazine was a finalist for general excellence. In 2008 I was the most honored newspaper writer in North Carolina. I’ve written everything from essays on gas-station coffee and barbers to longform pieces on suicide and gangs.

Before I moved to Charlotte, I was a staff writer and editor at Our State magazine, where I was part of a team that won Folio: Magazine Gold Awards in 2011 and 2012.

Before magazines, I was the Sunday enterprise reporter for The Fayetteville Observer. My work included: a story on a series of crimes committed by the Crips gang; a story on a man who survived after more than 80 percent of his body was burned as a 9-year-old; and a story about a high school basketball program at an impoverished school.

I’ve also worked as a reporter for the Rocky Mount Telegram and The Winchester Star. I’ve written for The Associated Press, Triad Golf Today, Midwest Living the News & Record, the Winston-Salem Journal, the High Point Enterprise, High Point University’s alumni magazine, and Wake Forest University’s law school.

I grew up in Maryland, where I mastered the crafts of delivering pizzas in 30 minutes or less and layering butter on movie-theater popcorn. I spent my summers working as first mate on my dad’s charter fishing boat on the Chesapeake Bay. I’m a graduate of High Point University, and in the fall of 2013, my alma mater honored me as its Young Alumni of the Year.
